Jonathan

Hello, my name is Jonathan Green, captain of S/V Blue Barb. I’m delighted to have you here to share in the remarkable journey of Nation Under Sail. As an ultrasound technologist, my life’s work has centered around caring for others. In 2022, I made the bold decision to put my conventional life on hold to pursue a divine calling that would allow me to reach those most in need in coastal communities worldwide.

My connection to the ocean began in childhood, where I felt an undeniable draw to the sea. There was something about the way it seemed endless and full of possibilities. My first experience at sea wasn’t smooth sailing. I battled seasickness and spent a long time questioning whether I was cut out for it. In high school, I had a vivid dream where I felt powerless, stuck, unable to do anything. It left a lasting impression that shaped the way I view life. I refused to let that feeling define me. Ever since, I’ve woken up each day determined to prove that dream wrong. For me, fear is a signal, not a stop sign. I believe it should never stand in the way of our passions, our willingness to explore new opportunities, or God’s call on our lives. True freedom comes when we face our fears head-on and embrace the unknown with faith and determination.

My career in medical imaging has given me the privilege to witness how compassionate care can transform lives and improve outcomes. Whether it was easing the fears of a nervous patient or collaborating with a team to deliver life-changing diagnoses, I’ve seen firsthand how caring for others creates ripples of positive change that extend far beyond the moment. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the profound impact empathy and service can have on individuals and communities. While I’ve temporarily stepped away from my clinical role to pursue this initiative, my commitment to serving others remains at the heart of everything I do. The lessons I’ve learned in healthcare continue to guide my efforts to make a meaningful difference wherever I’m called.

I spent a year in a graduate program studying polymer science, exploring the intricate properties of materials and their potential to solve real-world problems. As I delved into the complexities of polymers and their applications, I began to reflect on the broader impact of my work. While the science was fascinating, I couldn’t ignore the environmental challenges tied to plastic waste and pollution. Vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected by these issues. There are communities where plastic waste accumulates due to poor waste management infrastructure, lack of recycling facilities, and the global flow of waste that often finds its way to coastal areas. This environmental degradation not only makes it harder for people to access basic resources but also creates health and economic challenges that deepen their vulnerability.

Nation Under Sail is more than just a sailing adventure. It is a platform that embodies our shared commitment to humanitarian stewardship. It is a natural extension of my dedication to caring for others. Through this website, I aim to share our journey and inspire others to join our mission of spreading hope. Every life touches countless others, and by serving those in need, we honor the sanctity of all life.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s sail together towards a future where compassion knows no bounds.
